At SIT's Professional Officers Division, Professional Officers are academic staff who bring in rich industry experience and technical skills/ knowledge to our work, creating authentic laboratory and learning environments where discovery and innovation takes place. We work closely with academic programmes to improve the skills of our students, and to strengthen and upskill our industry and the wider community.

Being a team of experts who are passionate about mentoring/coaching students in higher education, we have a combination of job responsibilities across applied learning, applied research and lab management.

In this role, relevant domain expertise and industry experience, safety processes, SOPs, risks assessment in one or more of the following areas is required:

Chemical – Chemical, Process safety, proper disposal of chemicals, etc.
Biological – Proper handling of microbes, etc.
Electrical – Proper handling of heavy current, high voltage supply and equipment, etc.
Mechanical – Proper handling of heavy, sharp tools, operation of machinery, etc.
Civil – Proper handling of heavy tools, samples/parts and machinery, design for safety, etc.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create authentic lab learning environment and safety education, include developing and improving module content and equipment and imparting a safety mindset in the students;
• Mentor and coach students in their IWSP and capstone projects;
• Lead and/or support applied research project focusing on the innovation space, including those that are secured through grants;
• Manage centralized laboratory resources:
• Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment;
• Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations in lab;
• Provide training to students on usage of laboratory equipment;
• Coordinate procurement activities and liaison with vendors/suppliers to operate lab activities;
• For those hired at senior levels, management responsibilities may be included

Job Requirements: 

• Have a Engineering related degree from a recognized University. Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous.
• Registered PE/ CEng as well as relevant safety qualification preferred and will be advantageous.
• Have at least 10 years of work experience in EHS environment:
• Deep, hands-on competence and understanding in safety related matters.
• Have strong technical competence in safety management system, safety processes, SOPs, risks assessment, hazard identification, safety training, safety culture, regulation, etc.
