Research Engineer (3D Artist – XR & AI Simulation)
We are seeking a motivated Research Engineer (3D Artist – XR & AI Simulation) to join a multidisciplinary research team working on AI-enabled solutions for transportation operations and maintenance. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing high-quality 3D models, animations, and digital assets to support research and development in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The developed assets will be used in immersive XR applications as well as simulation environments for AI model development, training, testing, and validation.
The candidate will work closely with researchers, AI engineers, XR developers, robotics researchers, and industry partners to translate real-world environments, equipment, and operational scenarios into realistic and computationally efficient digital representations.
Key Responsibilities
- Create high-quality 3D models, environments, textures, materials, and digital assets based on real-world equipment, facilities, photographs, CAD data, scans, and other reference materials.
- Develop 3D animations, including mechanical movements, equipment operations, human activities, and maintenance procedures.
- Design and optimize 3D assets and environments for VR and AR applications, with consideration for real-time rendering performance.
- Develop realistic simulation environments and synthetic 3D scenes for AI model training, testing, and validation.
- Collaborate with researchers and industry partners to understand operational requirements and reproduce relevant real-world scenarios in virtual environments.
- Support the development of demonstrations, research prototypes, technical presentations, videos, and other visualization materials for the project.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in 3D Art, Animation, Game Development, Digital Media, Interactive Media, or a related discipline.
- Strong demonstrated experience in creating and optimizing 3D models, environments, animations, textures, materials, and other 3D assets for XR (VR/AR/MR) applications.
- Proficiency with one or more professional 3D content creation tools such as Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, or equivalent. Ability to create accurate and realistic 3D models and environments from photographs, drawings, CAD models, scans, point clouds, or other reference materials.
Experience in creating 3D simulation environments and synthetic data for training AI models will be a significant advantage. In particular, candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Building 3D simulation environments for AI model training, testing, and validation.
- Generating synthetic datasets from 3D environments for computer vision applications, including object detection, segmentation, scene understanding, and robotic perception.
- Using NVIDIA Omniverse, Isaac Sim, or similar platforms for AI/robotics simulation and synthetic data generation.
- Photogrammetry, 3D scanning, LiDAR, point-cloud processing, or reconstruction of real-world environments.
Interested candidates are invited to submit the following:
- An updated CV/resume detailing relevant education, professional experience, technical skills, and project experience.
- A portfolio or personal/professional website showcasing relevant 3D work. The portfolio should preferably include examples of 3D modelling, texturing, animation, XR (VR/AR/MR) assets and environments, and other 3D content.
- Candidates with experience in 3D simulation or synthetic data generation for AI training are strongly encouraged to include relevant examples in their portfolio, together with a brief description of their contributions and the tools/platforms used.
Applications without a portfolio or website demonstrating relevant 3D work may not be considered.
