Schemes of Service:  Research
Division:  Electronic & Computer Engineering
Employment Type:  Fixed Term

Job Purpose

SIT's Immersification Lab is looking for a Research Engineer who shares a passion for exploring how immersive technologies can be applied to real-world problems.

The Research Engineer will join a team of faculty, engineers, clinical partners and students working on MedicaTwin, a collaborative digital twin that helps therapists assess patient homes remotely. The work is carried out with Tan Tock Seng Hospital and builds on R3CAP, our platform for capturing, reconstructing and collaboratively editing real environments in 3D across mobile, desktop and XR devices.

SIT has a strong applied research focus in immersive technologies, with interdisciplinary projects that work hand in hand with industry and healthcare partners. Work in the Lab surfaces in published papers and in open-source software that the community can use.

This is a fixed-term position ending on 6 July 2027.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, implement and maintain components of the R3CAP and MedicaTwin systems, including 3D capture and reconstruction, XR and cross-platform interfaces, and supporting backend services.

- Translate requirements from clinical partners into working features, and iterate on them through regular reviews with the hospital team.

- Support the planning and running of user studies with therapists and patients, including study setup, data collection and analysis.

- Guide student developers through code review, task planning and technical mentoring.

- Contribute to research publications, demonstrations and open-source releases.

- Maintain project risk assessments, follow Work, Safety and Health requirements, and ensure safe operation and maintenance of research equipment.

Job Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or a related field with a strong mathematical foundation.

- Solid software engineering practice, including version control, debugging and maintaining a shared codebase.

- Familiarity with modern AI engineering, such as LLM agent harnesses, tool use and context management.

- Experience with 3D reconstruction, computer graphics or human-computer interaction is an advantage.

- Academic research experience or a publication record is also an advantage.

Key Competencies

- Sound understanding of interaction design and software architecture, with the ability to judge the quality and correctness of software artifacts, whether created by people or AI.

- A genuine care for quality, and the persistence to push code, design and writing, including AI-generated output, to a high standard.

- Systematic approach to problem solving and debugging.

- Ability to work independently, take ownership of work and show initiative.

- Clear communication with both technical and non-technical partners, including clinicians.

- Flexibility to work across functions and teams in a dynamic environment.
