About the Project This project, conducted in collaboration with industry partners, aims to develop an innovative rapid curtain-change system for Singapore hospitals. The system targets three key challenges in healthcare facility operations: ergonomic safety for an ageing workforce, infection control, and retrofit compatibility with existing ceiling tracks and reusable curtains.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and CAD modelling of curtain hook mechanisms, track inserts, and assistive tools using SolidWorks or Fusion 360
  • Fabricate and assemble prototypes using 3D printing, CNC machining, and workshop facilities
  • Translate operational requirements from UEMS and hospital staff into engineering design specifications
  • Conduct mechanical strength, fatigue, and ergonomic testing of prototypes in simulated and real healthcare environments
  • Coordinate user trials and structured feedback sessions with UEMS supervisors and hospital staff
  • Assist in co-supervision of student researchers (FYP/capstone) together with the Principal Investigator
  • Coordinate procurement and liaise with vendors and suppliers
  • Prepare technical reports, progress updates, and presentations for the project team and funding agency

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design, or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent) and rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, CNC)
  • Strong foundation in mechanical design, prototype fabrication, and testing methodologies
  • Knowledge of human factors and ergonomics principles is an advantage
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams; exposure to healthcare or service-related projects is preferred
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with ability to interact effectively with industry collaborators
