As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.

The successful candidate will contribute to an innovation-driven project aimed at developing a Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) library preparation protocol optimized for low-quality DNA extracted from fuel samples. The initial appointment is for three months, with potential for extension based on funding availability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake these responsibilities in the project:
      1. Design and optimize NGS library preparation protocols for low-quality and low-yield DNA derived from complex fuel matrices.
      2. Conduct laboratory experiments to test and refine DNA extraction and library construction workflows.
      3. Operate and interpret results from analytical instruments, with particular emphasis on using the Agilent Bioanalyzer for assessing DNA integrity and library quality. Proficiency with the Bioanalyzer is advantageous.
      4. Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams, including molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, and industry partners, to align project outcomes with innovation goals.
      5. Maintain accurate and detailed lab records, including experimental designs, results, and protocol iterations.
      6. Analyze sequencing data in collaboration with bioinformatics experts to assess library quality and performance.
      7. Contribute to regular project meetings, reporting progress, troubleshooting technical challenges, and proposing experimental improvements.
      8. Support documentation and reporting for project milestones, including internal reports, presentations, and potential publications.
  • Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations.
  • Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers.
  • Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.
  • Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in molecular biology, with hands-on expertise in NGS workflows
  • Have a degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Life Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related Bioscience field.
  • Familiarity with NGS data analysis or bioinformatics tools is a plus

Key Competencies

  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with people within and external to the university.
  • Self-directed learner who believes in continuous learning and development
  • Proficient in technical writing and presentation
  • Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Show strong initiative and take ownership of work
